Get rid of DOUBLE CHIN & FACE FAT
You’re looking at your side profile and suddenly wondering—where did that double chin come from? Even if you eat well, don’t gain weight, and work out regularly, that little fold under your chin seems to appear out of nowhere and ruins your entire profile.
In this video, we’re going to break down exactly why a double chin forms and what actually works to get rid of it. By the end, you’ll have a clear understanding of which approach is right for you—and what results you can realistically expect from each method.
My name is Maria, I’m a licensed esthetician and beauty expert at Metodica Med Spa. Today, I’ll help you understand one of the most common aesthetic concerns and guide you toward a more defined, sculpted jawline.
What causes a double chin?
The first thing to understand is that a double chin isn’t always a result of excess weight. Surprisingly, even slim people can develop one. There are a few key factors at play here:
First, anatomy. Some people naturally have a weak jawline, an underdeveloped chin, or a low-positioned hyoid bone. All of these anatomical features can create the illusion of sagging in the lower third of the face. This is especially common in people with a recessed bite, where the lower jaw sits farther back. In that case, the muscles don’t stay taut — they begin to droop.
Second, posture. If you often sit with your head tilted downward or sleep on a pillow that’s too high, the platysma muscles and the skin around the neck and chin can lose tone. As a result, your chin appears less defined and less lifted.
Third, age-related changes. After age 30, collagen production starts to slow down, and the skin around the lower face loses elasticity. Combine that with a slower metabolism and hormonal shifts, and you get a visible softening of the jawline and the appearance of a double chin.
And of course, fat accumulation. In some cases, submental fat is the primary reason — especially if you’re genetically predisposed to storing fat in this area. This is often referred to as a “fat trap,” where the body tends to hold onto fat in specific areas, regardless of overall weight.
Can you get rid of a double chin without surgery?
The short answer is yes — as long as there isn’t a large amount of loose skin and the muscles still have some tone. But it’s important to approach this issue comprehensively. In some cases, a single treatment may be enough, but most of the time, the best results come from a combination of approaches: reducing localized fat, lifting the tissues, and improving skin firmness.
The first method: Kybella injections.
Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that contains deoxycholic acid — a substance that breaks down fat cells. Once destroyed, those fat cells are naturally eliminated by the lymphatic system and liver.
This treatment is great for those who have localized fat under the chin, but still have decent skin elasticity.
Kybella is injected directly into the area under the chin. The treatment may cause a slight burning sensation and swelling that can last 3 to 5 days. The number of sessions needed varies, but most people require between 2 and 6 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.
Over time, the chin area becomes slimmer and the jawline more defined. The key to long-lasting results is maintaining a stable weight — gaining weight after the treatment can diminish the effects.
There are some contraindications for Kybella: liver conditions, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and allergies to the ingredients.
It’s also important to note: after Kybella, your skin has to tighten on its own. If the skin is loose or saggy, you may need additional treatments to help firm and lift it.
The second method: Non-surgical skin tightening with Ultherapy
Ultherapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to heat the deep layers of the skin, including the SMAS — the superficial musculoaponeurotic system — which is the same layer targeted during surgical facelifts.
This ultrasound energy creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger the production of new collagen. Over time, this tightens the tissues, firms the skin, and even helps shrink fat pads under the chin. As a result, the skin becomes firmer, and the jawline appears more sculpted and defined.
Ultherapy is ideal for people who are experiencing skin laxity, a softer jawline, and mild to moderate fat accumulation under the chin.
Here’s how the procedure works: a special handheld device delivers ultrasound waves into the skin. The entire process is guided by a real-time imaging system to ensure precision. The treatment lasts about an hour. It can be mildly uncomfortable, but most people tolerate it well.
The key benefit of Ultherapy is that it’s a one-time treatment — there’s no need for a series of sessions. You’ll begin to see results in about three months, and the lifting effect will continue to build over the next year.
Ultherapy is a great option if your double chin is caused by mild fat and sagging skin, but you still have decent skin quality. It’s also often used after Kybella to enhance the results and improve skin firmness.
If your double chin isn’t the result of excess fat, but rather sagging skin, there are three methods we often recommend.
Laser skin resurfacing, for example, non-ablative ResurFX on the M22 machine by Lumenis. This treatment helps firm the skin, improve texture, and boost collagen production. The laser targets the deeper layers of the dermis, creating controlled thermal damage. This triggers the body’s natural regeneration process and leads to denser, more elastic skin. It works especially well on thin or weakened skin. The usual protocol includes 3 to 5 sessions one month apart.
Sculptra injections are another option — they’re a collagen-stimulating treatment based on poly-L-lactic acid. Sculptra activates fibroblasts and promotes your body’s own collagen production. The result is firmer, more lifted skin and better overall tissue quality. It’s ideal for people with thin, aging skin and volume loss in the lower third of the face. Results build gradually over 2 to 3 months, and we typically recommend a series of 2 to 3 treatments 6 to 8 weeks apart.
Botox in the platysma (the neck muscle) is a great solution for people with prominent neck bands or muscle tension pulling the face downward. Injecting botulinum toxin helps relax these tight muscles, softens the look of vertical neck cords, and subtly lifts the jawline. The effect lasts about 4 to 6 months and can be repeated as needed.
Chin and Jawline Fillers
Another effective method is injecting dermal fillers into the chin and jawline. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers help sculpt and define the lower face, creating a sharper jawline and more balanced profile. This approach is especially helpful for clients with a naturally recessed chin or age-related volume loss in the lower face.
Chin fillers can create the appearance of a longer or more projected chin, improving the facial proportions. When combined with filler in the jaw angles, the result is a stronger, more structured lower third of the face.
The procedure takes about 30–40 minutes, and results are visible immediately. Depending on the product used, results can last 12 to 18 months.
This technique can be used on its own or as a complement to fat-dissolving injections and skin-tightening treatments for an even more dramatic improvement in the profile and jaw definition.
What Affects Your Results?
The first major factor is weight stability. After procedures like Kybella or any contouring treatment, it's important not to gain weight. Gaining weight can cause fat to return to the submental area, reversing the results of fat-dissolving injections or making your jawline appear less defined. This is especially important after Kybella, since fat cells that were destroyed can be replaced if the body puts on weight. Extra weight can also stretch the skin and reduce tissue firmness, which may diminish the effects of treatments like Ultherapy or Sculptra.
The second factor is muscle tone. You can improve your results at home by working on your posture and trying gentle facial exercises like mewing. Mewing involves consciously placing the tongue against the roof of your mouth to improve jaw alignment and support the lower face. It doesn’t give instant results, but with regular practice, it can complement your in-office treatments and help maintain a more sculpted jawline.
And the third factor is your skin quality. If your skin is dry, thin, or lacking elasticity, it’s going to need additional care and stimulation. Let's talk about how to support your skin from the inside and out.
At-Home Routine to Boost Skin Firmness and Prevent Aging.
After any in-office treatment, maintaining your results with the right skincare routine is the key. The number one rule? Sun protection. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50 before going outside—even on cloudy days. UV rays can damage collagen, speed up aging, and reduce the effectiveness of your treatments.
Next, add products with antioxidants, peptides, and retinol to your skincare routine. Antioxidants like Vitamin C protect your skin from free radical damage and help brighten the complexion. Peptides support collagen production and improve skin elasticity. Retinol helps renew skin, smooth texture, and stimulate collagen over time.
In addition, lymphatic drainage massage 2–3 times per week can help reduce puffiness and support better circulation in the lower face. Sleep on a supportive pillow that keeps your head aligned with your spine—this helps reduce sagging over time. And don’t forget about gentle neck exercises to keep the muscles in your lower face and neck toned.
These habits, combined with the right treatments, will help you maintain a firmer, more youthful jawline and prevent new sagging from developing.
So, how do you know which approach will work best for your specific case?
If the main issue is fat under your chin, the best option is usually a combination of Kybella and Ultherapy. Kybella breaks down fat cells, while Ultherapy helps compact those fat pads and lift the surrounding tissue, creating a more defined jawline.
If your skin is sagging due to a loss of elasticity, the most effective plan may include Ultherapy, Sculptra injections, and laser resurfacing. These treatments stimulate collagen production, firm the skin, and improve the texture and density of the tissue over time.
If your chin is underdeveloped due to facial structure, dermal fillers can restore volume and help create a more balanced and harmonious side profile. A stronger chin helps visually tighten the entire lower face.
If platysmal bands (those vertical neck cords) or muscle tension are pulling your jawline down, botulinum toxin injections into the platysma can relax the area and improve the contour of your jawline. This treatment works well on its own or as part of a broader anti-aging plan.
But the most important thing? Get a personalized consultation with a qualified aesthetic provider. A customized plan that addresses your anatomy, skin condition, and goals is what delivers real, long-lasting results.
A double chin doesn’t have to be permanent. The key is understanding why it appeared in the first place—whether it's genetics, posture, aging, or fat accumulation—and then choosing the right strategy to fix it.
Most of the time, one treatment alone isn’t enough. But when combined—whether it's fat-dissolving injections, skin-tightening ultrasound, collagen-stimulating procedures, or structural fillers—these methods can deliver incredible results without surgery.
If you're dreaming of a sharper, more sculpted jawline, you now have the tools and knowledge to make it happen.
