What is IPL Photofacial?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses pulses of broad-spectrum light to improve skin. At Metodica Med Spa, we perform it on certified M22 Lumenis equipment, considered one of the best IPL in the world.

The main advantage of IPL is that it targets multiple skin issues at once — from vascular changes and pigmentation to acne and visible signs of aging. The skin surface remains intact, and recovery is quick and easy.

Who is this treatment for?

An IPL facial treatment addresses more than 12 common skin concerns. This procedure is for you if you want to:

  • pigmentation removal, age spots, sun damage;
  • acne reduction and eliminate breakouts;
  • lighten post-acne spots;
  • reduce rosacea, eliminate redness spots;
  • eliminate blood vessels and broken capillaries;
  • skin firmness, skin rejuvenation.

Thanks to the comprehensive action of IPL skin treatment, this procedure is suitable not only for those with visible imperfections but also for people who want to maintain youthful, healthy skin for as long as possible.

IPL and Acne

During an IPL face treatment, light pulses target acne-causing bacteria and the blood vessels that feed inflammation. As a result, breakouts are reduced, inflammation calms down, and sebum production is normalized.

The treatment also helps lighten post-acne spots, even out skin tone, and make the complexion clearer and smoother.

IPL and Rosacea

Rosacea is often accompanied by redness, broken capillaries, and increased skin sensitivity. Intense pulsed light photofacial gently coagulates visible blood vessels, gradually eliminate redness spots. The skin becomes calmer, more even, and discomfort such as burning sensations is reduced.

IPL and Pigmentation

Light from an IPL laser targets melanin, which accumulates in pigmented spots. The pigment breaks down into smaller particles, rises to the surface, and naturally exfoliates. As a result, dark spots fade, and the skin tone becomes more even and radiant.

IPL and Post-Acne Marks

Post-acne spots are often a mix of excess pigment and dilated vessels. IPL therapy works on both at the same time. Initially, the spots may darken slightly, but within 7–10 days they lighten, leaving the skin clearer and smoother.

IPL and Broken Capillaries

Broken capillaries and spider veins can be treated effectively with pulsed light laser treatment. The light selectively heats the vessel, causing it to collapse and gradually disappear. Redness and visible blood vessels fade, and the skin looks more even.

IPL and Skin Rejuvenation

The IPL benefits go beyond treating specific concerns. Light pulses stimulate collagen production, which improves skin elasticity, smooths fine lines, and shrink pores.

IPL for Preventive Anti-Aging

Starting IPL photofacial treatments around the age of 30, when the first signs of aging appear, is a smart investment in youthful skin. While you continue to age, your skin will look fresher and younger. For best results, one course of 4–5 sessions per year is recommended.

IPL and Overall Skin Quality

Intense pulsed light face treatment improves overall skin appearance:

  • minimizes pores;
  • evens out skin tone;
  • lightens spots;
  • smooths skin texture;
  • restores natural radiance.

Treatment Areas

IPL photofacial is not only for the face. It’s also effective for rejuvenating the hands, fading sunspots on the chest, and brightening freckles in the décolleté area.

How to Prepare for an IPL Session?

  • Avoid tanning and tanning beds for 2 weeks before treatment.

  • Stop using acids and retinol in your skincare routine 7 days prior.

  • Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup.

How the Procedure Works

  1. Consultation with an aesthetic provider and skin analysis using the Visia imaging system.

  2. Gentle cleansing and application of a cooling gel.

  3. Test flashes to select optimal energy settings.

  4. Full treatment of the target area with different filters (acne, vascular, pigmentation, etc.).

  5. Application of soothing cream and SPF.

The whole process takes about 30–40 minutes.

Skin Recovery

After treatment, mild redness is common and usually fades within 3–4 hours. Slight swelling is possible and typically resolves within 1–3 days.

When treating pigmentation, recovery takes longer: spots darken first, then lighten and exfoliate within 10 days.

How Many Sessions Do I Need?

IPL photofacial is a course treatment. On average, 3–6 sessions are recommended, spaced 2–3 weeks apart. The exact number depends on your skin concerns and their severity.

Equipment

At Metodica Med Spa, IPL treatments are performed with the M22 Lumenis system — certified equipment that ensures high efficiency and safety.

Treatment Cost

In Brooklyn, IPL treatment prices range from $300 to $650 per session. The difference in cost can be significant, and it’s important to understand why.

  • Low prices may indicate that the provider is inexperienced, uses fewer flashes than necessary, or works with uncertified or poorly maintained equipment. In such cases, results may be incomplete, and patients may not even realize why.

  • High prices are often tied to the provider’s reputation, advanced credentials, clinic location in a prestigious area, or added services. Sometimes this is justified, but not always — and the results may be the same as at a lower price point.

That’s why it’s important not to base your decision solely on price. Instead, focus on the provider’s expertise and the equipment used for your IPL facial treatment.

I couldn’t be happier with my experience here! I had lip augmentation, Botox, and Ultherapy done, and I’m currently in the middle of an IPL treatment series. The staff is absolutely amazing—professional, knowledgeable, and truly attentive. They took the time to explain each procedure and ensured I was comfortable every step of the way. The lip augmentation results are stunning—my lips look fuller yet completely natural, enhancing my overall look without being too much. The Botox has smoothed out fine lines perfectly while keeping my expression natural, and my skin feels tighter and more refreshed after Ultherapy. I’m already noticing great improvements from IPL, and I can’t wait to see the final results. This place exceeded all my expectations. Highly recommend!

I recently finished my IPL course, did Ultherapy, and also tried Botox at this med spa. I’m already thrilled with the results from IPL—my skin feels so refreshed! With Ultherapy, I’m still waiting for the full effect, but I’m already noticing little changes and can’t wait to see the final results. And the Botox was just the cherry on top—it smoothed out my frown lines beautifully! The whole experience has been amazing, and I feel more confident and excited about my skin. I’d absolutely recommend this med spa to anyone wanting effective, caring treatments!❤️

I’ve been a loyal client at Metodica Med Spa for over two years now, and I can confidently say it’s the best decision I’ve made for my skin! I regularly visit for treatments to maintain a youthful, radiant appearance for years to come.

The IPL skin rejuvenation treatments have been amazing for evening out my skin tone and reducing redness, while the Laser ResurFX sessions have helped smooth out my skin texture and improve overall firmness. I also recently tried Ultherapy, and the non-surgical face lift results are incredible, my jawline looks more defined, and my skin feels lifted and refreshed. The team at Metodica is always professional, attentive, and makes every visit comfortable. I’m thrilled with the results I’ve achieved and highly recommend Metodica Med Spa to anyone looking to invest in their skin and maintain their youth!

A few weeks ago, I had my first IPL photofacial at Metodica Med Spa, and I'm already noticing a difference! The M22 machine they use is amazing. My skin tone is evening out, and the redness from my rosacea is much less noticeable. The treatment was quick and comfortable, and I can’t wait for my next session!

Knowledgeable, professional and very nice overall. They listen and help. Especially huge thanks to Oksana - she is the only cosmetologist in NYC who was able to treat my rosacea. Not a single dermatologist was able to do that. Most definitely recommend to everyone.

FAQ

Q: Is IPL safe?

A: Yes, the procedure is safe when performed on certified equipment by a qualified provider.

Q: When will I see results?

A: For broken capillaries, results are visible immediately. In other cases, you’ll start noticing improvements after 2-3 weeks following the second session, with full results showing 3-4 weeks after completing the course.

Q: How long is the recovery time after treatment?

A: Most patients recover within a day. When treating pigmentation or vascular concerns, full recovery may take up to 10 days.

Q: Does an IPL phototherapy hurt?

A: The sensation is often compared to a light snap of a rubber band (rubber band). Any discomfort is minimal and well tolerated.

Q: How to prepare for an IPL session?

A: Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for 14 days, and stop using acids and retinol 7 days before the treatment.

Q: IPL vs Laser — which is better?

A: IPL uses a broad spectrum of light to address multiple skin issues at once. Laser treatments are more targeted but limited in scope. For comprehensive rejuvenation and correction, IPL and laser can also be combined in one treatment plan.
